The former Duke and Duchess of Sussex are leaving royal life behind to become financially independent
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have decided to step down from their position as senior members of the royal family. The couple will no longer be using their official titles or receiving funding to carry out any British royal family duties.
The couple made the shocking announcement that they were stepping away from public life in early January. The news was received with much surprise and speculation from the public. It was heard the pair had been in talks with the Queen for months to come to an agreement about stepping away from the limelight and perusing their new life abroad.
Prince Harry and Meghan are presently staying in Canada where the Duchess’ mother, Doria Regland also resides. The pair have been described as having a strong connection to Canada, where Meghan formerly lived for several years and the couple spent the previous Christmas.
It is believed that Prince Harry and Meghan will fund their new lives partially with Meghan’s acting career, and via their clothing brand Sussex Royal. However, it is reported the Queen has strongly advised them against the latter, as they are no longer acting members of the royal family.
There has also been controversy surrounding the excess spending of tax payer money in lavishly renovating the couple’s home of Frogmore Cottage. Prince Harry and Meghan have offered to reimburse the cost of the £2.4 million Royal Windsor Estate. The Queen has given the couple permission to live at the property on their visits home, as they are now expected to split their time between the UK and North America.
There have been many rumours and allegations as to why the couple have chosen to depart from Royal life and live more privately. Sources have stated that Meghan did not realise how big of a responsibility being part of the monarchy would be and it is not the type of life she wants her son Archie to have.
Prince Harry has continuously been protective of his wife, especially since she has been victim to repeated ‘bullying’ and scrutiny from the British press. In a statement relating to the matter some months ago, the prince declared: “I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”
Speaking publically on his family’s departure from the UK and leave from Royal life, the prince said the following: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”
