A pharmacy in one of the poorest parts of Birmingham has caused a major outrage across the area as they spiked the prices of a childrens Calpol, a general medicine, to £19.99.
There was a furious reaction to a tweet from city councillor Majid Mahmood who called out the pharmacy in his ward – Bromford and Hodge Hill – for the huge increase.
A normal bottle of a junior Calpol bottle goes for around £3.99, which is why it has caused major fury as it has spiked in one of the poorest parts of Birmingham.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) have said they are monitoring price increases in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
In a statement they said: “The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) wants to ensure that traders do not exploit the current situation to take advantage of people.
“It will consider any evidence that companies may have broken competition or consumer protection law, for example by charging excessive prices or making misleading claims about the efficacy of protective equipment. And it will take direct enforcement action in appropriate cases.
